Mike Masedza

He was born in 1967 in the Makoni district of Rusape. He grew up herding cattle and goats. During this time he modeled animals with friends, not knowing that one day he would turn this into stone. After graduating from high school in 1986, he met the late Joseph Ndandarika at the Vukutu Artists Retreat in Nyanga. In 1987 he moved to Hatfield where he joined Eddie Masaya and Joseph Ndandarika, and in 1989 he moved to Mhandara where he co-founded Gallery 2000 and collaborated with Eddie Masaya, Brighton Sango and Luke Mugavazi. His first local exhibition was in 1989 at Le Form, now Alliance Francaise in Harare, where he exhibited alongside Tapfuma Gutsa, Eddie Masaya, Brighton Sango and Norbert Shamuyarira. Mike works mainly in Springstone, Verdite, Serpentine and Opal. He is always looking for new ideas. He is currently the chairman of the newly formed Tafara Mabvuku Artists Association (TAMAA) based in Tafara, a township outside Harare.

Exhibitions

His first major international exhibition was held in 1990 at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in the United Kingdom, where he was the youngest among established masters such as Ndandarika, Mukomberanwa and the Takawiras.
